The mixed media abstractions are multi-layered pieces that use color, pattern and mark making to create contrast and tension within the paper surface. In order to both reveal and obscure information, I use multiple materials including collage, stencils, image transfer and gel medium. The abstract elements cover and alter information for the viewer to find.
One of my favorite consequences of the layering process is how the individual viewer has a unique perception of each painting. One person might find bits of recognizable imagery peeking out from the layers of paint while another person sees shapes in the abstract forms that are not necessarily there.
