Simple Stencils = Dynamo Designs: Discover the joy of stencil layers

In this class, we will draw (or trace) two or three shapes on card stock or any thick paper to make handmade stencils. We will test out our stencils with paint and scrap paper to see which ones works best. We will then use our stencils to create at least 2 colorful layered paintings, full of pattern and surprise.

This class is for all levels. Email laura@laurarabornart.com for dates and materials list.

Glue, Paper, Scissors:
Make a Statement through Collage

For this workshop, students will bring photo copies, maps, music sheets, newspaper headlines and articles, magazine images, etc. We will practice arranging the pieces and parts in two different compositions: one will be clustered in the middle of the page and the other will be spaced out in three areas of the page. We will discuss eye movement, balance and focal point before gluing down our various collage elements. Then we will glue the pieces down and have a group discussion about purposeful and unexpected messages and themes we created through our combination of words and images. If time permits, we will use paint to push back certain elements and emphasize desired focal points.

This class is for all levels. Email laura@laurarabornart.com for dates and materials list.

Turning Today’s Headlines into Art:
Combining Newspaper Collage and Handmade Stencils

This workshop combines techniques from the first two workshops in this series. However, beginners are welcome and the stencil and collage techniques from previous classes will be repeated.

Students will bring photo copies, maps, music sheets, newspaper headlines and articles, magazine images, etc. We will practice arranging the pieces and parts in two different compositions: one will be many overlapping elements and the other will one large music sheet, map or newspaper article glued down to cover the entire piece.

We will then draw (or trace) two shapes on card stock or any thick paper to make two handmade stencils. We will test out our stencils with paint and scrap paper to see which one works best. We will then use our stencils to create a pattern or one central focal point on top of our collages.

This class is for all levels. Email laura@laurarabornart.com for dates and materials list.

20 Prompts 2 Paintings: The Name of the Game is PROCESS

This class is for the daring, adventurous student who is ready for some action!

Unlike the previous three in this workshop series, the format of this class is a short introduction followed by timed prompts. We will alternate between two pieces, letting one rest while we work on the other. The purpose is to experiment and try new techniques without pressure or expectations. Perhaps you will end up with a finished painting or a fantastic background to save for just the right future project. Or perhaps you will end up with a mess that needs to be painted over and made ready for a new beginning another time. Even that outcome has benefits – you will have a paper rich with texture and history which is a fantastic surface for future paintings, drawings and collage work. So get ready for dots, stencils, spraying, splattering, dripping, collaging, image transferring, and wild wild mark making, just to name a few of the prompts.

Best for artists who have some experience with paint and mixed media materials. Email laura@laurarabornart.com for dates and materials list.
